History of Our Craft

Women have been crocheting lace in the Godavari River Delta of Andhra Pradesh, South India since Irish nuns taught them the skill during the colonial period of India’s history.   Not only do the women utilize this skill to make the SOFI totes that were ET’s first project, but they also continue to make the beautiful lace that they have made for decades.  Sadly, the lace industry in south India is severely threatened by machine-made lace that has flooded the world market.
