Literacy Training

In rural villages all over the world, women and girl children are usually the last to be educated.  Education and specifically the ability to read can empower women so that they can avoid being exploited or trafficked and they have more opportunity to earn an income.  It can even be a stepping-stone to being able to run their own small businesses.

Functional literacy training in Nepal not only enables women to learn to read and write, but informs them of the dangers of trafficking and HIV/AIDS. For this reason alone, the need to teach the rural poor about the risks of trafficking are immense.

Development agencies have found two predictable indicators for longevity among women in developing countries: accessible clean water and literacy skills. Another well-known fact is that in some societies, discrimination exists in educational opportunities based on a gender bias.  Of the1 billion illiterates in the world, two thirds of them are women.  97% of the women in Afghanistan are illiterate.

The Afghan women artisans who make the King's Garden Bracelet and other jewelry asked our partner for literacy training.  Eternal Threads is so happy to have provided that training to these women who want to better their lives. 

Through the generous donation of an Eternal Threads board member a six-month literacy training program was given to a group of village women in Nepal in 2008.  Through the sale of their goods and a generous grant from Kiwanis, Eternal Threads is now providing three six-month literacy courses to village women in Nepal.
