Thailand
O-Kart, which means “opportunity” in Thai, is a jewelry making project that started two and half years ago under the Ruam Mit Foundation for Youth, a community-based organization helping youth who are from small tribal communities. Some are Burmese refugees who are without citizenship, some disabled, but all have been marginalized, homeless, trafficked or addicted to drugs. Ruam Mit launched O-Kart in 2007 with financial and technical assistance from World Concern, a humanitarian organization working in integrated community development. The first group of youth trained to make jewelry is now training women in hill tribe villages.
